What is KCHIP?

The Kentucky Children's Health Insurance Program (KCHIP) is free health insurance for families without health insurance with an annual household gross income at or less than 218 percent of the federal poverty level for the following qualifications:

  • Children under the age of 19
  • Currently pregnant women
  • Women within 1 year postpartum

A family is considered a child or children and the natural, adoptive or step-parents residing in a household. Due to changes in the Affordable Care Act, effective Jan. 1, 2014, KCHIP eligibility is determined using the Modified Adjusted Gross Income and family size based on the tax filing unit of the household.

We know your family's health is important and certain barriers sadly exist, such as the cost or lack of coverage through your employer.  If you fall in to any of these categories and think you or your child(ren) might be eligible for help, apply today.

Kids Health Information Toolkit

The Department for Medicaid Services has created an informational toolkit to raise awareness about the availability of children's health insurance. These materials provide an overview with helpful tips and information about enrolling in KCHIP or Medicaid. These materials will also help families navigate the return of annual child renewals, starting with those who have a July 2025 renewal. Through a COVID-19 Public Health Emergency flexibility, coverage for children was automatically extended at the same time of their annual renewal. This flexibility ends on June 30, 2025.
